Land Rover Freelander Set for Electrifying Comeback as EV in 2026

Land Rover Freelander Reboots as a China-Built EV for Global Markets

The iconic Land Rover Freelander is making a grand return—but this time, it’s going fully electric. After disappearing from the market over a decade ago, the beloved SUV is set to re-enter the automotive world with a major twist: it will be developed and built by JLR’s Chinese partner, Chery, rather than in the UK.

A New Era for the Freelander

Unlike its previous iteration, the new Freelander EV will ride on Chery’s electric T1X platform, which also underpins several of the Chinese automaker’s own models. While JLR collaborated on early design and engineering inputs, production will be handled entirely by Chery at its Changsu plant in China.

The revived Freelander will debut as a premium electric SUV, with initial sales focused on the Chinese market before expanding globally. Reports suggest it will feature a dual-motor setup and an impressive 600+ km range, making it a strong contender in the fast-growing EV segment.

Why China ?

JLR is strategically repositioning itself in China, the world’s largest EV market. The company plans to phase out its current China-made models, including the Jaguar XE, XF, and E-Pace, as well as locally produced Land Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport by 2026. This shift clears the way for new, China-focused electric vehicles, with the Freelander leading the charge.

A Strategic Move for JLR

By reviving the Freelander nameplate as an EV-exclusive model, JLR aims to boost sales volume and regain traction in a market where luxury electric SUVs are in high demand. The partnership with Chery allows JLR to leverage local production advantages while keeping development costs in check.

What to Expect Next?

While the Freelander EV’s exact design remains under wraps, sources indicate a shared design language between JLR and Chery, blending British sophistication with modern electric aesthetics. A plug-in hybrid variant may also join the lineup later.

With its premium positioning, long-range capability, and Freelander EV could mark a turning point for JLR in the electric era.
